the artist behind Mesmerica...

James Hood is renowned as a vital and versatile musical pioneer - especially with his work on the PanART hang, a uniquely mesmeric melodic instrument, and for his collaborations with international animation artists.

His lengthy and varied musical resumé includes playing drums in The Pretenders, an ongoing two-decades-plus run as mastermind of the visionary ambient/electronica act Moodswings, and an expansive array of production and soundtrack projects.

Is the show suitable for guests who are prone to seizures or motion sickness?

There are no strobe lights used in the production but there are some fast image and light transitions, so we would advise caution for those who suffer from seizures. Equally, while the vast majority of our patrons have an amazing time with no issues, a small minority who are very susceptible to motion sickness find immersive entertainment slightly uncomfortable, so we would advise caution if you fall into this camp.

Is the show suitable for autistic people?

We have found that autistic people LOVE our shows! Please note the venue is dark and there is surround sound. We advise sitting at the end of a row if you think a quick exit might be required. Our on-site staff will assist if you alert them at check-in.

Show Times & Seating Schedule

  • Check-in begins 30 minutes before each show.

    Please note:
  • VIP ticket holders are invited to enjoy early seat selection in the planetarium, up to 15 minutes before show start time.
  • Seating is on a “first come first serve” basis.
We suggest that you arrive early to have the best pick of seating for your group.
  • Due to the dark environment of our theater, please plan to arrive on time and before the show starts. Latecomers will not be admitted.
  • No food, gum, candy or drinks are allowed in the planetarium.

Venue Information

Morehead State University Star Theater

The Space Science Center's Star Theater at Morehead State University is a state-of-the-art digital planetarium serving the surrounding areas of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia. It serves as a classroom and planetarium for the region's educators, MSU students and the public.

Located in MSU's architecturally compelling Space Science Center, the Star Theater is unlike anything else in the region. The 100-seat digital theater serves as a classroom and planetarium for the region's educators, MSU students and the general public. The Space Science Center offers regularly scheduled public planetarium and laser feature shows (from their extensive feature collection) that include live presentations of the night sky. School, community, and church groups can schedule the Star Theater for their own shows.
The Space Science Center also has special events, such as their celebration of International Observe the Moon night each year and the Solar Eclipse on April 8 2024.

The Star Theater projects full 180º x 360º real-time blended video and graphics on a 40-foot dome screen with state-of-the-art surround sound. In digital theater mode, the all-dome video allows a broad range of programming, including simulated travel through deep space and the ocean's deepest depths. This experience allows free movement through a 3D universe viewing endless astronomical phenomena, such as comets, planets, and supernovas, with full motion and 3D texturing. Our newly refurbished laser system also projects 3D images on the full dome.

PARKING AND DIRECTIONS

The parking lot for the Star Theater is located at the corner of East Main Street and Martindale Road, where Wetherby Hall (Gymnasium) used to be on the MSU campus.

  • From the center of town, head down East Main Street.
  • Turn left onto Martindale Road.
  • Almost immediately, you'll see the parking lot entrance on your left. Turn in here.

Landmarks to help you find the turn:

  • An Italian restaurant (Melini's) is almost directly across East Main Street from the Martindale Road turn.
  • A Family Dollar store is just beyond the turn, on the left side of East Main Street.

The Space Science Center, home to the Star Theater, is located on Martindale Road. From the parking lot, look for the domed building with bright lights. Walk up Martindale Road to reach the Space Science Center’s front door.

Accessibility Notes:

  • There are a few disability parking spots near the front door.
  • If someone in your group has mobility challenges but no disability placard, you may drop them off at the front door before parking.

We recommend allowing an extra 5–10 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the theater, depending on your walking speed. The ticket counter is straight ahead once you enter.
